Puja, shradhanjali sabha to mark death anniversaryof Vivekananda

VARANASI: The country will pay homage to Swami Vivekananda, the embodiment of Indian culture and intelligence, on the occasion of his death anniversary on Wednesday (July 4). The city, where Vivekananda spent some time before his departure to heavenly abode, will also hold programmes to pay tributes to the great soul.

Ramakrishna Mission Home of Service will organize a puja in Luxa area. Bharat Vikas Parishad is going to hold 'shradhanjali sabha' at Swami Vivekananda memorial in Nadesar and Gopal Lal Vila in Cantonment area, where Vivekanand stayed during his last visit to the city in 1902.

Inspired by the message of Vivekananda, a group of local youngsters started the Home of Service, a medical institution to serve the sick, especially the socio-economically disadvantaged in 1900.

They started this venture with four annas (25 paise), which they arranged by begging.

During his visit to Varanasi in February 1902, Vivekananda was immensely pleased to see the dedicated services of these poor but determined youngsters and wrote an appeal for funds. Eventually, the present land was purchased in 1908.

The home had the privilege to be blessed by the visit of Sarada Devi and most of the disciples of Ramakrishna. As time went by, the Home of Service grew and new wings were added. Today, this multidimensional institution of service with a 230-bedded hospital is spread in an area of 13 acres and specially caters to the needs of the poor and underprivileged patients.

"There is no public activity but puja will be held in Ramakrishna Mission Home of Service," said Dipika Singh, health educator.

The hospital, with modern infrastructure, has several sections like medical, surgical, urology, neurology, plastic and paediatric surgery and cardio thoracic, gynaecology, orthopaedic, ENT and ophthalmology.A new OPD block was established in 2003, which include many new sections like dental, dermatology, gastroenterology, psychiatry, audiology, PET, psychotherapy and physiotherapy.

Arrangements of both allopathy and homeopathy medicines have been provided in the OPD. There is a separate old age home for men and women in the premises housing around 40 members.

According to Pramod Ram Tripathi of Bharat Vikas Parishad, efforts would be made to preserve and develop Gopal Lal Vila as a heritage site. Vivekanand stayed at this place during his visit to the city in February 1902.

At that time, the place had a big garden all round and beautiful roses and gigantic trees. But, today there is only the ruins of the house amid wild bushes.

The College of Teacher Education and other government offices are situated in it. Tarun Kanti Basu, an elderly citizen, has also been raising the issue regularly to preserve the place as a memorial of Vivekanand.
