Udupi, May 10: As a humble service to entire humanity and to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama (Bailur Math) has taken the initiative to erect a 100-ft tall monolithic statue of Swami Vivekananda in Bailur (Karkala), just a few kilometres away from Udupi city.

On completion, the statue shall claim itself to be the biggest monolithic statue in the country as well as in the world, which will be "Instrumental in awakening the Divinity lying dormant in Man and in spreading the universal message of One World of Love, Peace and Harmony among people and keep it alive for all the times to come," said Swami Vinayakanandaji Maharaj of the Ashram. This project, huge in terms of both scale and complexity, the engineering challenges involved and the man power involved to make it see day of light. The work for stone extraction has begun at a quarry in Jarkala,14 km away from the final erection site. The ever continuing blessing and support of all the Committee Members, unfailing support of the ashram inmates, admirers and well wishers as well as that of the local people, and government has been paramount in the beginning for the smooth conduction of the on-going phase I of the project. People are excited to be a part of this noble initiative and have welcomed the chance to positively contribute to it.
The site, which can be reached by road, is located merely 23 km from the historic town of Udupi and around 75 kms from Dharmasthala. This engineering feat adds one more feather to the cap of south Karnataka region, which is already well known for its numerous tourist attractions. The mammoth structure has the potential to attract and awe visitors from diverse backgrounds across the world.
According to Ashram sources, further plans are also afoot in developing around the statue a cultural, spiritual and educational centre, for global integration and serve the purpose of global youth awakening, spreading the ever shining message of Swami Vivekananda, propounding the inner divinity of man.
